About the "Public Services Not Private Profit" campaign
Since 1997, New Labour has continued the Tories' drive to privatise our public services. Outsourcing, PFI, and other forms of private sector involvement being introduced in the justice system, education, health, the Royal Mail, rail and tube, youth services, council housing, fire safety, public service broadcasting, and across the civil service.
In Lambeth, council housing has been transferred to an ALMO despite residents voting against it and now Lambeth Council is proposing to give private companies ten-year contracts worth over 1.2 billion pounds to run housing services - without consulting tenants and without even considering whether the services could be provided in-house! In what they call "Partnering", hundreds of Lambeth staff could be transferred to private sector firms and services provided away from local, democratic control.
The increased trend towards privatisation puts at risk the accountable and effective delivery of public services. Those whose jobs have been privatised have found that their terms and conditions have suffered and their jobs are put at risk as greedy privateers put profit before quality of service.
The Public Services Not Private Profit Campaign is committed to building momentum throughout the country, as people are fighting back to defend our public services. We have already had packed meetings all over the UK including in Leeds, Liverpool, Bristol, Barnet, Croydon, Cardiff, Glasgow, Nottingham, Manchester and Blackpool.
